Apiary Studio

Apiary Studio was hired by the Lutheran Settlement House to design a vegetable-washing station and outdoor classroom for their urban farm along the Frankford Avenue commercial corridor in Fishtown. As a social-services organization, Lutheran Settlement House operates a  senior center, education facility and community kitchen. The adjacent urban farm is managed by teens during the growing season and the produce is used in the senior center kitchen. The pavilion is designed as a wooden-framed, enclosed space with a butterfly roof to trap stormwater for reuse in the gardens. The structure is enclosed in a snow fence scrim that reinforces the agricultural aesthetic and provides shading and privacy to the education and vegetable-washing activities within. The structure faces inwards, towards the vegetable gardens and have stadium seating to facilitate an outdoor classroom. Apiary Studio will assist with the installation of this pavilion in 2017.
