Landscape Architectural Services

We provide landscape architectural services in a broad range of environments. From rural farmsteads and wild preserves to  city rooftops and public spaces, we are comfortable working in environmentally sensitive areas as well as technically challenging urban environments. A description of our design process can be found here.  We provide the following standard landscape architectural services:

Horicultural Consulting

With a focus on use of native and regionally appropriate flora, we believe that there is a right plant for every situation. Although we do not use natives exclusively, our goal is to design beautiful and sustainable gardens that support wildlife habitat in addition to human enjoyment. We also advise on productive landscapes and nursery facility design.

Non-Profit Consulting & Environmental Planning

Having worked for three and a half years at the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, Hans has gained extensive experience in nonprofit management, environmental program development and strategic planning. Hans can provide consulting to environmental nonprofit organizations in the following service areas: environmental assessments, urban forestry, volunteer program development, strategic coalition building, grant writing and fundraising.

Construction, Installation & Maintenance

Hans has a lifetime of experience in nursery production and landscape installation, as well as time spent working in carpentry and subcontractor management. He is as comfortable with a hammer and shovel in his hands as with a pencil and paper. Apiary Studio offers a spectrum of landscape installation and maintenance services as well as the design and construction of small structures. Implementing proper maintenance procedures is particularly important if a landscape is to be guided towards reaching its fullest potential. We can also produce detailed and illustrated maintenance manuals for clients who wish to manage the evolution of their landscape in house.

Nursery & Cut Flower Production

We are slowly rolling out an urban nursery at our facility in Kensington, Philadelphia, which grows native and urban-adaptive plant species in small container sizes for use in urban projects that require interesting plant material and have tight budgets. If you’re looking for a specific plant that s difficult to find in the nursery trade, we are happy to custom-grow crops.
